FIAT Factory Located in the Lingotto district, Turin's FIAT factory first began building its luxury automobiles here in 1923. At that time it was the most advanced factory in the world, with an assembly line that rolled new cars out onto the roof level, where they could be test driven. It is now a modern complex of shops, concert halls and a hotel, but parts of the old factory remain and can be visited. Address: Via Nizza Turin TO Italy

A subject of much controversy, the Shroud of Turin (Santissima Sindone)is believed to have been the cloth that was used to wrap the body of Christ after the crucifixion. A faint and ghostly image, bearing signs of wounds consistent with those Jesus sustained, is imprinted on the fabric. Several tests have been performed to prove or disprove the story, the results of which are discussed at the museum. The Shroud is sometimes on display around the corner at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist (Cattedrale di San Giovanni Battista). Address: Via San Domenico 28 Turin TO Italy

Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist (Cattedrale di San Giovanni Battista) No visit to this city is complete without a visit to the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, a fine example of baroque architecture and where one of Christianity's holiest artifacts, the Shroud of Turin, is usually kept. It is said by believers to be the cloth that wrapped the body of Christ after the crucifixion, and bears his ghostly image. If not here, the controversial Shroud may be found around the corner at the Holy Shroud Museum. Address: Piazza San Giovanni Turin TO Italy
